The ring tone is the brainchild of Unite Here Local 1, a workers union in Chicago mainly comprised of hotel and restaurant workers. They introduced the Spanish-language ring tone a couple of weeks ago.
Angel Castillo, the group’s organizing director, told the Chicago Sun-Times that “we [the union] are using technology to notify every immigrant in this city that they’ve got rights.”
The ringtone is actually in the form of a song—a jingle really—that translated, says “if immigration comes to arrest you, keep calm. You have the right not to sign anything and not to say anything. You have the right to remain silent, also the right to ask for an attorney.” The ringtone features lyrics from the song entitled “Nada Nada.” Every time it plays, it reminds (or brainwashes) illegals that they aren’t required to say anything to law enforcement if questioned about immigration status.
The union released the ring tone in response to increased federal immigration actions, crackdowns and policies implemented by President Donald Trump. Unite Here Local 1 joins several other immigrant rights groups who have initiated similar efforts.
And they’ve got backing from the city of Chicago. Everyone’s favorite windbag of the Windy City, Mayor Rahm Emmanuel, joined Chicago aldermen and community leaders to promote the new ring tone.
City Alderman Danny Solis (25th) said, “Immigrants, whether they’re documented or undocumented, have rights.” Solis continued to describe the ringtone as a great strategy to protect “us” from Donald Trump, who Solis says is bad for the country and the cities.
This begs the question: In a city that is the murder capital of America, is a ring tone really a priority? And how much worse can Trump be than Obama? Even as an African-American president and native of Chicago, Obama could do nothing to stop Chicago from spiraling out of control. Just to put it into perspective, cause of death data shows that 94% is due to homicides. A person is shot every 2.5 hours in Chicago and one person is murdered every 13 hours. It is truly one of the most dangerous places to live in this country.
It all comes back to the mentality of Emmanuel and others who focus on “fixing the cops” instead of fixing all the other woes of their city, including violent illegal immigrants and murderers. How did we get here? What ever happened to electing people who are concerned about protecting the city’s legal residents from slaughter and mayhem?
