The mayor of this major city, who is quite familiar with terrorist violence, is encouraging its citizens who have a gun permit to carry a weapon with them at all times to counter a recent wave of terror.
Jerusalem, Israel Mayor says carry a weapon
Jerusalem Mayor Nir Barkat, who carries a fully-loaded Glock pistol at all times, told YNet News that “Possessing weapons increases the confidence of residents, who know that in addition to police there are many people who are not afraid to intervene. If we look at the statistics in Jerusalem and elsewhere, we see that aside from the police, civilians carrying weapons have foiled terror attacks. They will increase the likelihood of fast intervention.”
The call to action by Barkat is in response to the recent wave of terror in Jerusalem, East Jerusalem, Tel Aviv, West Bank, and other parts of the Israel. Many terrorist attacks have in the past been thwarted by armed Israeli civilians. Since attacks are wide-spread throughout the country, it is hard for Israeli police and military to be everywhere, so civilians have armed themselves to prevent further bloodshed.
i24News reported Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said “We are in the midst of a wave of terror of knives, firebombs, stones and live fire. These actions are mostly not organized, but they are all the result of wild and untruthful incitement from Hamas, from the Palestinian Authority, from several neighboring counties and, no less, from the Islamic Movement in Israel.”
Detroit police chief urges citizens to arm themselves
Washington Times reported Detroit Police Chief James Craig told its residents he could not protect them and they must do it themselves. Detroit is a city plagued by chronic unemployment and crime and guarded by a dwindling police force. Those who protect themselves and do so responsibly by obtaining the proper licenses have the blessing and backing of Craig.
“When you look at the city of Detroit, we’re kind of leading the way in terms of urban areas with law-abiding citizens carrying guns.”
Alabama sheriff urges citizens to take up arms to defend themselves
Sheriff Jimmy Harris of DeKalb County, Alabama urged its citizens to do more to protect themselves in light of terror threats.
Harris released a statement in which he expressed concern about the variety of threats faced by U.S. citizens, especially the growing worries surrounding so-called “lone wolf” attacks like the shootings in Chattanooga, Tennessee. “When people can walk into schools, movie theaters, recruiting stations, etc., and pull out a gun, it’s time for all of us law-abiding citizens to take a look at how we protect ourselves, family and friends,” Harris wrote. “I ask you to put your faith in God, and as a lifetime NRA member, it is time you learn to protect yourself by learning the proper and safe ways to handle a weapon.”
Milwaukee, Wisconsin sheriff says residents should learn to use firearms to defend themselves
Milwaukee County Sheriff David Clarke, Jr. released a statement asking residents to purchase and learn to use firearms so they can defend themselves, since cutbacks and layoffs have greatly diminished his department’s ability to respond to 911 calls in a timely manner.
