Republican party presidential candidate Donald Trump told CBS’s Face the Nation that the Oregon community college massacre outcome may have been different had the teachers been armed.
“I think that if you had the teacher, assuming they knew how to use the weapon, which hopefully they would, you would’ve been a lot better when this maniac walked into class, starting to shoot people.”
Military Analyst – School was targeted because it was a gun-free zone
Trump’s comments are supported by CNN military analyst Rick Francona who suggested that the Umpqua Community College shooter may have specifically targeted the school because it was a “gun free zone.”
Francona said that people are unable to defend themselves in gun free zones and so that’s why some crazy person with a gun might specifically target that area.
Law school professor- Mass shooters are drawn to gun-free schools
Cornell School of Law professor William A. Jacobson wrote an editorial article for USA Today and stated “In almost all mass shooting situations, particularly at schools, the common theme is a gun-free zone, with the shooter being the only one armed person in the building for minutes or longer,” Jacobson wrote. “And in each case, the shooter couldn’t care less about the gun-free nature of the building, and if anything, was drawn to such a location.” Jacobson went on to comment “The good people are unarmed, the evil person is armed.”
Jacobson argued that Umpqua security officers were unarmed and police officers were several minutes away. The “shooter had several critical minutes when he, and he alone, ruled over those who obeyed the gun-free zone rules.”
Do you think teachers should be armed?
